Civic Learning and Community Engagement

JCC Workshop   As part of the LEAD Office this year, I have been afforded the opportunity to work and connect with not only the Mason community, but also the greater community surrounding Mason. Through workshops like those with Hampton Middle School students and members of the local Jewish Community Center, I have been able to engage with the greater community. Being a Leadership Consultant has definitely allowed me to engage with the community in ways I would have been able to before. Through my work at the LEAD Office, I have also been able to identify what values are important to me, like community, and use that knowledge of myself to influence how I take on projects or make decisions. Through classes like Active Leaders and Emerging Leaders, I have been able to reflect on my values and learn more about other people’s values and identity. While I have taken or facilitated those classes, by hearing those different perspectives I have also gained a better understanding of issues that people face in society.

Outside of the LEAD Office I have been able to get involved with the greater community as well. Integrative Studies class like INTS 210 connect me with opportunities like working at the Child Development Center on campus by gardening and teaching the children about related topics. The skills I have learned working in the LEAD Office have also helped me be successful when participating in other community engagement opportunities.
